Our Story

A National Church Body

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) has more than 2 ½ million members in over 6,000 congregations in the U.S. with mission fields in almost 60 countries. Through the Lutheran heritage our roots go back to Europe and Martin Luther in the early 1500’s. The LCMS also has a large education system in the U.S. ranging from pre-K, to grade school, high school, colleges and seminaries.

Our Congregation

For over 50 years Redeemer Lutheran Church has been a vital Christian presence in the Greater Portland area. Originally meeting in South Portland, the congregation’s first worship service was held in 1962. In 1965, Redeemer purchased the site for its first church home on Spurwink Avenue in Cape Elizabeth. Groundbreaking was in 1967, and the new church building was dedicated one year later. In April of 2005, our Lord placed Reedemer in its current location at 410 Main Street in Gorham. In March of 2019, Redeemer began holding Divine Services in Sanford.
