While we’re in the midst of the dog days of summer, we can be thinking about an upcoming cool event. Reservations are now open to help decorate The Lutheran Hour Rose Parade float.  This will be LHM’s 75th time entering the new year with a Christian message of hope in Jesus Christ in the form of a floral Rose Parade float. “Team Jesus” serves as a reminder that it takes all to fulfill the callings Christ has placed upon us to do the work of bringing Christ and His redeeming love to the world.  The design includes a Luther Seal on the nose of a blimp, crosses on the side of the blimp, 75 on the tail for the 75th year of having a Lutheran float in the parade. The LHM float is the only Christian float in the parade and carries on a mission to provide a Gospel witness to millions of viewers everywhere. If you’re interested in volunteering to help with the production of the float, visit petalpushers.org

Where are you traveling this summer?  We often worship with other LCMS churches when we travel within the US, but how about when you travel overseas?  We have missionaries all over the world who would love to meet you and invite you to worship with them.  Additionally, many countries have Lutheran churches with whom we are in fellowship.  For more information visit https://www.lcms.org/worldwide-regions.

Redeemer Saints:  I am sorry to inform you that we are rescheduling the August 24th Voters' Assembly to September 7th. The reason for this change is the need to comply with our By-laws section 2.2.1, and our Constitution Article XII, section 2, which require that the agenda and any proposed By-Law amendments be distributed to the congregation two weeks prior to the Voters' Assembly.  I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that my mistake may cause you. The proposed agenda and By-law changes, along with the routine reports, will be sent out this week by email and will be available in printed format for both Sanford and Gorham locations this weekend. (August 23rd in Sanford, and August 24th in Gorham).  Thank you for your understanding.  Darik

A Life Thought in the Church Year for August 24 – St. Bartholomew (Proper 16C): Proverbs 3:8 promises that fearing the Lord and turning from evil brings healing to “your navel.” Belly buttons testify to gestation. Scripture’s prescription for surprise pregnancy encourages rejecting death. If the Apostle Bartholomew gave his very skin trusting in the resurrection body (tradition suggests his martyrdom flayed him alive), the Gospel leaves no room for “my body, my choice.”

A Stewardship Thought August 24 – Trinity 10 Luke 19:46 – "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a den of robbers." The Lord’s House is not a house of merchandise or profit — it is a House of Prayer where people freely offer up their petitions to the Lord and their produce for His purposes. Generosity and joy characterize the House of the Lord, not compulsion or sharp dealing. “Freely you have received; freely give” (Matt. 10:8). That's pretty much the opposite of the world's marketplace!

Toothbrushes for Madagascar.  Lynne Kasch is joining others from Our Savior Lutheran church in Topsfield, MA on a Mercy Medical Team going to Madagascar in September.  The team will provide much needed health care to people in this medically underserved area.  Short-term volunteer teams offer medical professionals and support personnel opportunities to volunteer abroad in a variety of clinical and health-related settings.  Clinics address needs of both body and soul.  The team is collecting toothbrushes to give to those who visit the clinic.  We can participate by providing the team with toothbrushes to give to those who come to the clinic.  Bring in new toothbrushes by Sunday, September 7.  To learn more about Mercy Medical Teams, visit https://www.lcms.org/mercy-medical-teams.

A Life Thought in the Church Year for August 31 – Pentecost XII (Proper 17C): God in His glory disguises the sanctity of life so that we may know the joy of finding it (Proverbs 25:2). Great delight awaits those who search beyond appearances, behind ages, beneath abilities to receive every neighbor as a blessing. May we with both lips and fingers reach into sin’s hiding places to pull sons and daughters out (Luke 14:5).

A Stewardship Thought August 31 – Trinity 11 Luke 18:14 – “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Our works never impress God; they are always lacking in some way and fall short of perfection. So there is no point in taking pride in them. But a broken and contrite heart the Lord will not despise — and the works that flow from a broken and contrite heart are indeed pleasing to the Lord in and through Christ. These works will be used by the Lord for His purposes and to His glory!
